The painted rocks of Tafraoute – one of the most surreal places we saw in Morocco

If you ever find yourself near Tafraoute in southern Morocco, don’t skip the painted rocks.

We already knew where we were going. We had found the location beforehand and planned to stop there for the night nearby, so this wasn’t one of those completely accidental hidden gems. Still, nothing really prepared us for how impressive it would feel in real life.

We arrived in the evening, just as it was getting dark, and stayed overnight in an allowed spot nearby. The next morning, we woke up in the van, opened the door, and were greeted by one of those views that instantly makes you stop for a second. It was one of those proper woooow moments.

The giant boulders, the unreal colours, the open landscape, and the dramatic sky made the whole place feel slightly surreal – like a piece of land art dropped into the middle of nowhere.

The painted rocks near Tafraoute are one of Morocco’s most unusual land art installations. They were created in 1984 by Belgian artist Jean Verame, who painted huge granite boulders in the desert using bold, unexpected colours – mainly shades of blue, pink, and yellow.

The project was created as a large-scale artistic intervention in the landscape, turning an already impressive rocky valley into something even stranger and more dreamlike. Over time, the colours have faded under the sun and weather, which honestly makes the place feel even more special. It doesn’t look polished or artificial – it looks weird in the best possible way.

Why are the rocks painted in those colours?

That’s probably the first question most people ask when they see this place.

The short answer is that the colours were chosen to create a strong contrast with the natural desert landscape. Instead of blending in, they were meant to stand out.

The cool blue and soft pink tones feel almost unreal against the warm, earthy surroundings of the Anti-Atlas mountains. The yellow adds even more contrast, especially when the light hits it properly. It’s strange, bold, slightly absurd – and somehow it works perfectly.

What it feels like in real life

Photos are cool, but being there in person is different.

The rocks are huge, there are a lot of them, and the whole place feels much bigger than it looks online. You’re not just looking at one painted boulder – you’re walking through a whole scattered landscape of giant colourful stone.

We visited in mid-February, so it was still off-season and there weren’t many people around, which made the whole experience even better. The silence added a lot.

Standing there among massive blue and pink rocks in the middle of Morocco really does feel a bit like being on another planet. It’s weird, it’s beautiful, and it stays with you.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes – absolutely.

Especially if you like places that feel a little unusual, a little artistic, and a little bit unreal. It’s easy to find, it doesn’t require a huge effort to visit, and it’s one of those places that genuinely feels more powerful in real life than it does in photos.

That alone already says a lot.

Tips if you visit

If you want to properly explore the area and climb around, wear comfortable shoes. The rocks are big, uneven, and spread out, so it’s much nicer if you give yourself time to wander instead of just stopping for a few minutes.

And if you can, stay nearby overnight. Waking up close to a place like this – especially with crisp morning air, silence, and one of those ridiculously beautiful Moroccan skies – makes the whole experience even better.

For us, that morning view from the van was half the magic.
